Earlier this summer, a Refinery29 survey revealed how women feel about their bodies, and among the more shocking revelations: 73% of respondents said that wearing a swimsuit at the pool or beach is one of the most stressful situations they face; nearly three in four reported they avoid the beach because of their body image. Sadly, I know all too well how these women feel because I spent the first couple of summers in Chicago letting my mind bully my body into thinking it wasn’t good enough to be a beach body. Unfortunately, these negative feelings are exacerbated by the fact that social media and magazines are packed with tips on how to get that elusive “beach body,” making swimsuit season a time of dread rather than joy for some women.
Thankfully, those antiquated ideals are on their way out as people begin to reject the expectation that there’s some sort of so-called “perfect bikini body” you should have before slipping on a swimsuit. These days plenty of women around the world are taking to Instagram wearing their favorite swimsuits with hashtags like #EmbracingMyBody and #EveryBodyIsABeachBody—plus they’re having a ton of fun doing it!
