Happy Woman Crush Wednesday Friends! Are you ready for more girl boss inspiration? Last time, we shined the light on Kyshira S. Moffett, the Founder of successful career coaching business, #HERmovement. I am extremely EXCITED to share with you the new Wonder Woman of week, Nikki Ellis! Recently, our paths crossed on Instagram and I immediately knew she was someone special. Nikki attended the International Academy of Design and Technology in Florida, studied abroad in London at the American Intercontinental University and interned with Polish Designer, Katarzyna Szczotarska. Her creativity flourished in that internship and she soon found herself in NYC as an Assistant Designer for a menswear line where several of her designs graced the runway during New York Fashion Week. While in New York she also embarked on a career as a Freelance Stylist for several companies including Saks Fifth Avenue E-Commerce. Nikki eventually left New York City to be closer to family. Back home in Tampa, Florida she pursued a career in Visual Merchandising for such esteemed companies as JCPenney, Dillards, and Forever 21. With over 10 years of fashion industry experience under her belt she launched a blog called Style Rehab. Nikki Ellis also offers styling services as a Freelance Stylist and Personal Stylist.
Why did you start a blog and business?
I started a blog to share my fashion point-of-view with people. I hoped to inspire people to try different things and be creative with their fashion. Then I started to offer services to provide a more one-on-one experience with people. Then I started my vintage shop to bring fabulous thrifted items to people who either couldn’t find them or didn’t have time to thrift. Over time my blog and business has expanded and I’m excited to see where it takes me.
What are you proudest of and how did you achieve it?
My proudest moment I would say was starting my Vintage Shop on my blog. I had a million reasons not to start the commitment, I’m too busy you name it but I finally decided I wanted to move forward. Granted it’s still frustrating at times lol I really hate technology and I’m not techy but it’s been great!
What advice would you give some one who is thinking of starting a blog or business?
I would say my biggest piece of advice is two-fold. 1. Consistency. If you’re not all-in then don’t bother starting. This is super time consuming so if you’re not willing to invest the time in it then don’t bother and 2. is don’t get discouraged. You will have ups and downs just enjoy the ups and don’t stress about the downs. Easier said than done I know and I should listen to my own advice on that one. lol
How did you choose the name Style Rehab?
I’m not sure how I chose my blog name but it came to me one day. I remember asking all of my friends and family what they thought of my blog name. I really wasn’t sure if I liked it for a while but now I love it!
What are your favorite apps or tools for staying organized and running your blog and business efficiently?
I’m really old school so I do a lot of work myself. lol I am starting to us PicMonkey to edit my photos. I use an old school paper calendar to schedule out all my posts and things to work, etc. Like I said I’m old school so I like having something tangible to plan out my content.
What websites or creative communities do you recommend for entrepreneurs?
Visit sites to help with your SEO and local networking sites and groups.
How did you become aware of your entrepreneurial spirit?
I knew I had an entrepreneurial spirit while I was interning in London. I was thinking about all the time I was spending working for her for FREE and how I could spend that time creating my own line. It really bugged me how much time I spent working on other peoples projects. That’s when I knew I wanted to be self-employed. I’m still striving for that but one day!
What do you enjoy most about blogging?
I love the connection you make with your followers. Granted I do not know my followers personally but to hear that I inspired someone or that they love what I’m doing makes all of this worth it! I went through so much stress setting up my shop but my first purchase went to my cousin. It was a dress for a work function and she was so thrilled with the dress she bought from my site. That was such a great feeling! Or hearing people love one of my outfits is really humbling to me. They don’t have to comment on a photo they can just hit Like and more on but to comment means I’ve made that connection!
How do you unwind?
Shopping! Whether it’s thrifting or online shoe shopping it just makes for a great day! Or binge watching something on Netflix like Gilmore Girls that I’ve only seen 1,000 times.
Tell us five random facts about you.
I’m obsessed with Elvis Presley. I like to watch History shows and read biographies of famous people. I actually get embarrassed by attention. I LOVE College Football! Like I’m obsessed with it!
When do you feel most like yourself?
When I’m wearing heels! Lol But seriously when I’m in flats I feel like a fish out of water. It doesn’t feel right.
How do you get over a low self-esteem day?
Hanging out with my babe. He makes me feel so beautiful! When I’m having an off day like I feel fat or am having a bad makeup and face day (yes a bad face day is like a bad make up day but maybe I broke out ugh it sucks and makes you feel ugly) he just laughs at me but he cheers me up and I forget about whatever was making me feel bad.
Will you share your favorite vacation or adventure with us?
My favorite vacation was last year my boyfriend and I took our first vacation together and we went on a cruise to the Bahamas. I know totally crazy our first trip we were trapped on a boat together but it worked out great! We had an amazing time. One of our excursions we went parasailing and I LOVED that!! It was hilarious I was so nervous about it when we were getting on the boat then we were up in the air and I was like a kid! I was screaming and kicking my legs having the time of my life. Meanwhile my boyfriend was terrified and just looked straight ahead the entire time. I died laughing. My poor baby. We are doing a cruise to Aruba this year and I’m dragging him parasailing again.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
Don’t compare yourself to other bloggers. Seriously, if they have more followers or more likes who cares this is your blog and your baby. You can’t compare yourself to others.
