Whether we like to admit it or not, mainstream media representation has a deep impact on our lives everyday. The characters we love, and love to hate help shape who we are, who we aspire to be, and how we view the world around us. That is why I am so thankful for Jonquel Norwood’s plus size fashion illustrations.
Norwood was born and raised in a small city outside of New Orleans which is where she discovered artistry and a love for art. After hurricane Katrina, she moved to Atlanta to finish school at Savannah College of Art and Design, where she studied illustration. While living there she was exposed to the fashion industry, but couldn’t ignore the fact that her style and body type were under-represented.
Norwood discovered Full Figure Fashion Week after moving to New York and it changed her world and the way she viewed it. The bold fashion and attitudes inspired her to create a collection of plus size illustrations; which is no small feat because although she studied illustration, there aren’t any guides to drawing plus size bodies. Oh boy am I glad she took that leap of faith! Now we all can be inspired, empowered, and even purchase her prints and makeup cases.
As always thank you for reading, commenting, and liking!
