Wonder Woman: Jessie Barber

I like a woman who knows what she wants and goes after it. Enter Wonder Woman of the week Jessie Barber, the brains and beauty behind Mini Penny Blog. I’m head over heels in love with her style and thankful for her detailed matte lip reviews. Don’t judge me. You all know I’m a sucker for a bold lip. If you’re not reading it regularly or following her on Instagram, Facebook, or Pinterest, you are missing out!

She spends many days and nights working as the Shop Manager for Chicago Tattoo Company and still manages to create captivating images and content for Mini Penny Blog. Jessie has been featured on ABC news, Refinery29, Buzzfeed, MTVStyle, and many more so I am beyond flattered she agreed to be interviewed by me.

WCW: When do you feel most like yourself?
MPB: When I’m working on Mini Penny Blog. This is a project I’ve been working on for over four years — sometimes when life gets busy and I get pulled away from it, I realize how important it is to me and how big of a creative outlet it is. I always like to be working on something, and normally that something-of-choice is the blog.

WCW: Where are you originally from and where do you live now?
MPB: I grew up in a very rural area of Ohio. It was a farming community and very conservative. I’ve lived in Columbus, Philadelphia, and Chicago. Chicago has been my absolute favorite. I love it here. I’m currently in West Town but hoping to move to Ravenswood!

WCW: What are you proudest of and how did you achieve it?
MPB: I am very proud of my independence. It’s something that was always ingrained in me as a child. I’m the youngest of six, and I spent a lot of time off on my own drawing and writing. I was always ready to be out and about on my own and making my own path!

WCW: Tell us about your favorite vacation or adventure.
MPB: There are so many! As kids, we always took road trips around the US. As an adult, I’ve really come to love motorcycle trips. A few months ago my friends and I rode to Northern Wisconsin and back. It was a lot of fun and we had plenty of speed bumps along the way — it was a great learning experience, too!

WCW: Who or what inspires you?
MPB: I manage a tattoo shop as a ‘day job’, so it goes without saying that I work with very creative people. They’re always doing something fantastic. Seeing what they do and how they translate tasks really helps me look at things from a new angle. It’s amazing how it can kickstart ones’ creativity to be immersed in that type of culture all the time.

WCW: What’s in your purse?
MPB: Always my camera, some mint toothpicks, and bluetooth headphones.

WCW: We’re all glued to something! What can’t you live without?
MPB: My camera. I’ve owned cameras my whole life. I went through a phase of shooting engagements and weddings and all of that, but nowadays I ditched my giant SLR for a compact Fujifilm X100T. I take it everywhere with me. I actually had an incident with it recently and had to send it out for repair — it took two months to get it back and I had withdrawals!

WCW: What’s your guilty pleasure?
MPB: Oh gosh… Law and Order SVU with particular interest in Chris Meloni and BD Wong.

WCW: What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
During a trying time while I was living in Philly, my friend Angus would talk to me about the importance of putting out positive energy and positive words. I think more or less it was along the lines of “no one wants to be friends with a grouch.” I think about that every time I’m being a brat. It’s really, really true.

WCW: How do you get over a low self-esteem day?
MPB: I leave the house and go see some friends. If that’s not an option, I sleep. I think we all get those days, which is okay.

WCW: When do you feel most beautiful?
MPB: When I’ve finished a long, difficult task. It’s weird, maybe, but setting goals and meeting them it really a self-esteem booster for me. For example, I felt super babely after i passed my motorcycle licensing test or the first time I saw my back tattoo after a painful four hours.

WCW: How do you unwind?
MPB: When it’s warm, nothing makes me feel better than a motorcycle ride. Now that we’re creeping into winter, I find some relaxation in background-Netflix while doing my nails.

WCW: Name your favorite place to shop online and in store.
MPB: Online I use Depop a lot. It’s a app I use to clean out my closet, sell vintage, and buy more stuff I don’t need (hehe) from other sellers. My user name is @minipennyblog, find me! In-store, there’s a great boutique around the corner from where I live called Tarnish. They sell wonderful clothes and motorcycle gear and the owner is just a peach.

WCW: What’s your favorite thing to spend money on?
MPB: Chocolate Eclairs or shoes.

WCW: Do you consider yourself a feminist? Why or why not?
MPB: Absolutely. I don’t really know how to answer the ‘why’ part — If you’re a woman and you want equal treatment, you’re a feminist. It’s as easy as that. I think it’s important to know what feminism means to women around the world or of different cultures and really examine why we consume media the way we do.
