Meet Meg Ten Eyck, the 28-year-old writer and editor behind the successful lesbian travel blog Dopes on the Road. She’s a full-time traveling blogger and life-long nomad, never having lived anywhere longer than 5 years.
WCW: How did you choose the name for your blog?
DOTR: Honestly, the name started as a joke. I never expected it to be my business, so my partner and I created it as a play on her parent’s thoughts of us traveling the world. I started the blog as a means to record my year teaching ESL in South Korea. At the time, blogging was a fun hobby. The first year I completely fell in love with blogging and realized that there were people who did this full-time. I actually had a panic attack before leaving for Korea, but now realize it was the best choice I ever made. The last two years have been filled with planes, trains and odd jobs, all in the effort to chase my wanderlust high.
WCW: What are you enjoying most and least about blogging?
DOTR: I love interacting with my readers and doing social media related projects. I hate doing SEO and back end coding. BLAH
WCW: What’s your educational and professional background?
DOTR: I have a Bachelor’s in Sociology from Keuka College and a Master’s in Public Policy Administration from the Colin Powell School. I worked as an LGBT activist for 8 years before jumping ship and moving to South Korea to start my blog.
WCW: We’re all glued to something! Name 3 things you can’t live without.
DOTR: My Iphone because Instagram, my Macbook because blog and my toothbrush because… welll hygiene
WCW: Name your favorite place to shop online and in store.
DOTR: Urban Outfitters, ASOS, Nasty Gal, and Balmain if I was bougie and not ballin on a budget.
Thanks again for doing this segment! I’m pretty sure 1/3 of the blogs I follow are thanks to you!!!!
