Without further ado, I give you our Wonder Woman of the week, Joanna Hughston! She’s a UK based beauty & lifestyle blogger who gracefully balances blogging, studies at University, and her blossoming marketing career. Joanna recently earned a degree in French and Philosophy, and will begin a graduate program in marketing next month.
- How did you choose the name for your blog?
It was actually my friend who came up with it so I can’t take much credit! I’d been trying to come up with a name for a few days and she was helping me to brainstorm by throwing out random words to do with beauty and makeup. One of us said “pores” and then “Pores for Thought” was born!
- When or how did you become aware of your entrepreneurial spirit?
Gosh, I’m still not 100% sure if I have a true entrepreneurial spirit, but I do try! All I know is that I’ve always been quite a creative person. When I was young, I used to spend all my time writing plays, songs, and stories, and then I’d get all my friends to perform them with me. So I’ve always liked putting my imagination to good use. When I started blogging, it was originally meant to be a small hobby which would help me to find a job in marketing. Now though, it’s become one of my favourite pastimes, so I definitely think this has helped to give me confidence in putting my ideas out there.
- Describe your best practices for organization and balance.
I actually wrote a post on this recently with my 6 tips for balancing blogging with exams. *click here to view it* I find the best way to keep my life organised, especially with trying to balance studying for my degree with hobbies and a social life, is to make a lot of plans and lists! I’m one of those people who keeps about 10 lists of “things to do”, ranging from long-term to short-term goals. I just find it’s easiest for me when I know exactly what I need to do and how long I have to accomplish it. And secondly, I would say it’s very important to keep some element of balance to your life and try not to stress yourself out too much. Everyone needs a day off binge watching tv in their PJs sometimes!
- Everyone has bad habits, what’s yours?
I have two very bad habits. One is buying far too much makeup and clothes that I just don’t need (the blog probably hasn’t helped this). The second is my mild addiction to trashy television shows. Keeping up with the Kardashians? The Hills? Made in Chelsea? I love them all.
- Name your favourite places to shop online and in store.
This is a tricky one as it depends what I’m in the market for. I think for online shopping it has to be ASOS. It just has everything, and there’s so many styles and brands on the website. In terms of in store shopping, I love French Connection and Topshop for clothes, and then just somewhere like Sephora for my makeup needs.
- Tell us about your favourite vacation or adventure.
I’ve been lucky to have quite a few adventures in the last couple of years! Ones that stand out are travelling Europe last year with a friend or going to America and Canada with my boyfriend. I’ve also just got back from 3 weeks of travelling round Italy, so check out my blog if you fancy reading more about that. And finally, I always have very good memories of a week spent in Portugal when I was 10. We rented a big villa near the beach with my parents, uncle and aunt, 4 cousins, and my friend. That always sticks out as a fab holiday for me!
- What is your greatest personal achievement?
Right now, I’m still over the moon to have completed my degree and achieved a 2.1 final grade. I’m also so happy to have got myself a dream job working in marketing for an awesome company. Another personal achievement was having spent a year abroad in France during my third year. Before I went, I was so so nervous and worried I wouldn’t have any friends and would be miserable! However, it ended up being the best experience of my life and I gained so much independence and confidence from the whole thing.
- What are your most proud of in your professional life?
I feel like my professional life is only just beginning to be honest! Although, while I lived in France I worked as a foreign language teacher in two schools, teaching English to 11-16 year-olds. I had two classes of students with learning difficulties and disabilities which was quite tough at first, but by the end of the year, I’d formed really good relationships with them and they were always excited about lessons with me. That felt very rewarding!
- Provide a link to your favourite blog post.
I wrote a post called “5 Common Myths about Girls who Love Makeup” which I still feel quite strongly about! Click here to view it.
- Has your blog changed your life?
In some ways, yes I think it has. I think it’s given me a really good hobby which has taught me lots of new things. It’s given me some practice for being more organised, I’ve learned some photography skills and lots about social media, and I’m now starting to get invited to bloggers’ events so hopefully will get to meet some other bloggers! I also think it’s given me a bit of confidence to put myself out there more and not care as much what people think.
- Describe your educational background?
I’m very lucky that I had parents who worked really hard and had very successful careers. This meant that they could send me to a very good public school. It was one of those classic English all-girls boarding schools (although I was a day-girl), sort of like what you read about in an Enid Blyton novel. I genuinely loved my time there though and always appreciate how hard my parents worked to send me there. I know that I’ve been very fortunate.
- What’s your favourite line of cosmetics?
Ok, people are always asking me this and it’s too damn hard I tell you! It’s like choosing a favourite meal, I have about 20! In terms of high-end stuff, I love MAC and Dior, and also Clinique for skincare. For something more budget friendly, I always look at Topshop and Rimmel makeup. (Yes I know that was 5, not 1!)
- What’s your favourite fragrance?
It’s called Mitsouko by Guerlain. I just love the fairly strong scent of cinnamon, jasmine, bergamot and oak moss. It’s quite woody and very original. Not one for the faint hearted though! I wrote a post on my signature scent a few months ago, click here to view it.
