Without further ado, I give you a very ambitious pioneer for self-acceptance and our Wonder Woman of the week, Sheila Lopez! She earned a degree in Film Production at the University of Texas and is currently a writer, model, housing manager and in pursuit of a master’s degree in counseling. Sheila does it all and still squeezes in time for blogging on Curvytrend. Let’s jump into the interview and get to know her better.

  • How did you choose the name for your blog?
When I initially started my blog, I kept thinking of words that  would encompass my journey and my interests. Words like ‘plus-size’, ‘fashion’, and ‘beauty’, kept coming to mind. At the time, I was starting off my journey into body acceptance and the word ‘curvy’ just seemed to fit so well. ‘Curvy’ describes not only my body in a positive way, but also the winding road of struggles into positive body image. I combined it along with the word ‘trend’ to describe trending topics or discussions for curvy women. I don’t think curvy is a better word than ‘plus-size’ or ‘fat’, but I do feel it was the best fit for my blog.
  • When or how did you become aware of your entrepreneurial spirit?
There are many endeavors I want to take. One day I’d like to be an editor or writer for a plus-size magazine, start my own clothing line, and own a private practice as a counselor. At the moment, I am investing in my plus-size modeling career. As a fresh face in the plus-size modeling world, every experience is imperative to my growth. I’ve invested my earnings into a professional photo-shoot. When possible, I work with up and coming photographers not only to save on costs, but also to develop with other artists; we both grow through practice. I look at every possible opportunity as an honor. And, if I have to pinpoint a moment in which I developed an entrepreneurial spirit, it would have to be when I decided to enter a plus-size modeling competition. I am in the running at www.curvyidol.com. It is within this moment that I decided to invest in myself and there’s no better investment than that.

  • Everyone has bad habits, what’s yours?
I am overzealous at times with all I have going on from modeling, blogging, school, and other pursuits. I never like to turn down an opportunity and this can come at a price. So, I tend to forget that self-care is key. It’s important to be able to enjoy personal time with your partner, friends, and family. It’s a juggling act, and I must admit sometimes I drop the ball.

  • Tell us about your favorite vacation or adventure.

I love the beach! I was born and raised in Brownsville, Texas which is a border town at the very tip of Texas. It’s hot basically. Ha! Pretty much South Padre Island was in my backyard. In high school, my friends and I would go daily to sunbathe, swim, and just relax. I would call it my getaway from the world. I find the beach a tranquil place, somewhere I can just be. I would love to travel to Paris, London, Tokyo, NYC, and pretty much anywhere fabulous!!

  • What is your greatest personal achievement?

I am proud of different accomplishments like my acceptance in St. Edward’s University for a Master’s in Counseling to my selection into Curvy Connect Magazine’s May swimsuit edition. You can check it out here. But, if I had to narrow it down to my single greatest achievement, I would say it would be my body acceptance. I feel like it’s an ongoing process of self-love, care, always constantly evaluating yourself, like a PhD of sorts. Putting all this effort into body acceptance requires many practices like reading, writing, blogging, staying active, modeling, mindfulness, self-care, and that’s work. You’re putting your mind and body to work for you.

  • Provide a link to your favorite blog post.

From my own blog it would be Six Lessons from Real Women Have Curves, https://curvytrend.wordpress.com/2015/03/25/six-lessons-from-real-women-have-curves/. My favorite blog post from another writer is a message from Kelsey Miller for The Curvy Con subscribers http://us5.campaign-archive2.com/?u=bda9455e26058adfc21b82b17&id=d17c154fc6. She has such a powerful message for women and body acceptance.

  • Has your blog changed your life?

Yes, it has changed me in many ways, but the most important to me would be my thought process. Like all writers, I review my piece, edit, and at times ask other people to read it before publishing. I am constantly reading my work and tweaking it. This has allowed me to be more conscious and aware that my words carry great strength. They can be weapons for hate, discrimination, hurt, and pain. They can also be used for good by offering advice, encouragement, understanding, a new point of view, and empowering other women. My blog has made me aware that my voice matters so I won’t give that up. I am here to stay, and I encourage other women to use any platform that allows their voice to be heard.

  • What’s your favorite quote?

I have many. Here are my two favorite quotes:

There is no wrong way to be a woman. -Denise Bidot

We realize the importance of our voice when we are silenced. -Malala Yousafzai

  • What’s your favorite line of cosmetics?

I love Hard Candy and e.l.f. cosmetics. They are cruelty-free and affordable. If I am going all out with lipsticks, I usually like to order from Lime Crime. I would really like to get my hands on some Jeffree Star liquid lipsticks and Kat Von D’s line of make-up.

  • What are you most proud of in your professional life?

I am proud of my achievements from my blog, which is steadily getting more followers, to my development as a plus-size model. I have a long way to go, but I have already achieved a great deal as a novice. My photos and blogs have been featured in Curvy Connect Magazine, that’s all about building myself into a professional writer and model.
