Happy Friday Friends!
I’m so excited about this week’s wonder woman! If you missed what this series is all about click here for an update.
Without further ado, I give you a true superhero, a registered nurse, birthday girl of the week, my dear friend and our wonder woman of the week Kendra Gill. She graduated from the University of Central Oklahoma in December 2009 with a Bachelors of Science in nursing, GO BRONCHOS! Kendra found her passion in hospice nursing and currently works at an inpatient hospice facility.
What made you choose nursing & specifically, hospice nursing?
I’ve known I wanted to be a nurse since I was a little girl. My grandmother (my Nana) was a nurse and I always admired her growing up. I never even considered another profession. Five months after passing nursing boards and getting my license, my Nana had a massive heart attack. She was in the hospital for five days before she passed. As a nurse, I knew everything that was happening over that five day course as she declined and eventually died and I had to explain it to my family, my mother and her three siblings. After being informed that she was not going to live much longer, I suggested hospice to my family. I had seen patients in the hospital with poor prognoses endure aggressive treatment to no avail and most people are unaware of inpatient hospice in the hospital. I did not want her to suffer. I was angry and I questioned why I was in a profession that I had dreamed of for as long as I could remember. Why did I have to know everything that was happening with my Nana as I watched her body shut down? I did not want to be a nurse anymore. It took some time, but just has she had shown me how to provide exceptional care in life, she showed me, through her death, how to provide that same care to someone who was dying- and not only to the patient, but to their family as well, because I now knew what it was like to be the family member losing your loved one.
Name 3 things on your bucket-list.
I would like to visit every state in the U.S., go on an Alaskan cruise, and be fluent in Spanish
Describe your best practices for organization and balance.
When it comes to organization, I am a list person, whether it be on my phone, a dry erase board, or my calendar, I have to make lists!
What’s your favorite movie or television show?
I have become a Scandal addict. On Thursdays 9/8c you will find me on my couch tuned in to ABC to see what Olivia Pope is going to “handle” next
Name your favorite place to shop online and in store.
I love H&M. There isn’t an H&M store in Oklahoma and not as wide of a selection online but whenever I travel, a trip to H&M is always in order!
Where are you from originally?
I was born and raised in Oklahoma. I’m from a town called Wewoka. I wouldn’t change a thing about being raised in a small town!
What is your greatest professional and personal achievement thus far?
I recently went back to school to pursue a Master’s in Healthcare Administration. When I finished nursing school I was pretty adamant about not going back to school because the possibilities within the nursing profession are endless. However, the field of healthcare is forever changing. So, here I am, in the first semester of my Master’s program. I’m excited to see what the future holds! Wish me luck!
Name one item you can’t live without.
I’ve become one of “those” people… I can’t live without my cell phone. Although I do put forth a conscious effort not to be on it ALL the time. My pet peeve is using cell phones at meal times and it saddens me when we are out to dinner and I see couples or families at a table and everyone is on their cell phones.
What’s your favorite quote? What are your goals for 2015?
My favorite quote and my goals go hand in hand. “Be the change you want to see- 2015.” That’s my motto for the year. When this year kicked off, I was very intentional about not making resolutions. In fact, I had read my resolutions from the year before and got discouraged because, like most people, I had made a laundry list of things and not followed through with hardly any of them. It wasn’t until mid-February that I decided to write a list of goals, not just for the year, but things to constantly work on to improve my overall being. Most of my goals were associated with a quote. So, here they are:
- Work out- when it comes to working out: 1) get up 2) dress up 3) show up 4) never give up. This has been a struggle for me. I’m in good health, I have pretty good eating habits, but I’m out of shape. I’m at the point in my life where I know I need to make exercise and eating healthy a lifestyle and be consistent. I’m still struggling with working out consistently, but hey, the year is not over yet!
- Be on time. “Tardiness often robs us of opportunity”
- Think positive, Be positive. “I am in control of my attitude and today, I choose happiness!” “If you don’t like something, change it, if you can’t change it, change your attitude”
- Live in the moment, don’t just be in the moment- we live in a time where everything of any significance must be put in a text, tweet, status update, snapchat, or posted to The Gram.
- Stop making excuses! “If it’s important to you you’ll find a way, if not, you’ll find an excuse.”
Tell us about your favorite vacation or adventure.
My favorite vacation was my honeymoon in Orlando, Florida. We went to Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure, as well as Animal Kingdom and Magic Kingdom. We actually spent the 4th of July at Magic Kingdom and the fireworks show was incredible. My husband and I are both really big kids at heart- so we rode a lot of rides and got to take pictures with numerous Disney characters. It was perfect for us!
How do you unwind?
I’ve worked night shift for 5 years. My routine when I get off work is to come home, shower, and put on pajamas. I’ve gotten to where even if I’m not getting off work, when I want to unwind, I come home and change into my pajamas- it doesn’t matter what time it is! Pajamas = relaxation! However, I recently just had a pretty nice sized deck built on to my house. It is very peaceful out there in the mornings and in the evenings just before sunset. I will definitely be utilizing the deck frequently and can see it as my wind down space!
