Today marks Windy City Wardrobe’s first official ‘Wonder Woman’ interview *happy dance* If you missed what’s it’s all about click here for an update. With out further ado, I give you our Wonder Woman of the week, Katelyn Herlein!
What’s your educational and professional background?
I graduated from Iowa State University with a BS in Apparel Merchandising, Production, and Design. I also finished with a minor in Event Management, Journalism and Public Relations. I currently work at Meredith Corporation, as the E-commerce Editor of an online fashion & beauty magazine called, Divine Caroline. At Meredith I manage style and beauty bloggers from around the world while attending New York Fashion Week seasonally and organizing + styling large editorial photo shoots. I also contribute regularly to the site, manage interns and oversee Divine Caroline’s social media platforms. At night I’m a freelance stylist and writer for Juice Magazine, the Director of Social Media for Go Blog Social, the co-founder of Midwest Style Bloggers and the style contributor for WHO TV Channel 13 News.
How did you choose the name for your blog?
When I was thinking of starting my blog, I had just moved to South Carolina for the summer to caddy for my boyfriend—now fiance’—Brandon while he played on a professional golf tour. We were both wanting to take leaps that summer to help make our dreams come true. I knew it was the time to start my blog and at that time I lived on Katalina Drive. The name went with my name—Katelyn—so I thought it was fitting. Plus, I liked that it was different than everyone else’s and that it was broad and wouldn’t pigeon hole me into a specific topic.
When did you become aware of your entrepreneurial spirit?
I think it was from a young age—maybe 5. I always had lemonade stands, sold my craft bracelet or whatever I could to make money. I remember when I was probably 9 or 10 and I created my own babysitting business. I made flyers, printed them off and knocked on doors in my neighborhood to introduce myself and personally hand them a flyer.I definitely think my entrepreneurial spirit took off when my parents moved me from Nebraska to Iowa in High School. I was totally on my own and had to depend on myself to make something of the rest of my high school experience. I think starting a business is a lot like that experience in the sense that if you want to create something amazing, you yourself have to make it amazing.
Describe your best practices for organization and balance.
I just use a planner and write everything down. If the allotted space for that day in my planner gets too full, I slap a sticky note on top of it an continue writing. It really helps me to write things down. I like checking the tasks off as I go to ensure I get everything that needs done, done. I carry my planner EVERYWHERE!
How do you unwind?
It’s nothing fancy by any means. It’s normally one of two things. One, I lay in bed with my fiance’, glass of wine in hand and watch our favorite TV shows. Two, meet Brandon up at the country club and eat dinner—and wine—on the patio overlooking the tree lined golf course. It’s so serene out there.
What are your goals for 2015?
Successfully plan a wedding in Cabo without having to sell my left arm to pay for it, relaunch my blog and help my fiance’ grow his home building business. I do all of the marketing, PR and design for it.
